Ethiopians dominate Obudu mountain race

Ethiopian athletes for the third time on Monday carted away the star prizes at the Obudu International Mountain Race, thereby maintaining dominance of the event.Mesfin Hunegnaewai (Ethiopia) came first with a time of 41.50 minutes to take away the $50,000 star prize. His counterpart, Atsedy Tsegay came second with a time of 42. 12 minutes and got $20,000 while Azmeraw Beke, another Ethiopian, came third in 42.30 minutes and went home with $9,000.For the women category, Yalew Genet, an Ethiopian, came first in 48.45 minutes winning $50,000, second was Ayelewu Wuda Yimer who finished in 49.10 minutes and got $20,000 while Margaret Wangari of Kenya picked the third position and went home with $9,000. Countries that participated in this years edition include Egypt, Kenya, Eritrea, Malaysia Ethiopia, Uganda, Turkey and the hosts Nigeria.Speaking to newsmen shortly after the race, Genet, said this was her first outing in the event and lauded the state government and the LOC for maintaining the standards.Genet, 18, promised to defend the title next year.On his part, Hunegnaewai said, "I like mountain race and have been running for years; I thank God that at last I have won the Obudu Race."
