Lagos Speaker decries lack of legislative trainers

Published by Punch on Tue, 29 Nov 2011

Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, has decried lack of experienced legislative trainers in the nations democratic space.Ikuforiji, at a five-day retreat for members and support staff of the Assembly, said it was unfortunate that the scarcity of the experienced hands had slowed democratic process in Nigeria. He said, It is very unfortunate that though Nigerias democracy is growing, having been allowed to run freely for the past 12 years, there is acute scarcity of those skilled in legislative business to train and retrain legislators and their aides. And this poses a great danger to the development of the nations democracy. It has therefore become very necessary for us to ensure that more Nigerians specialise in legislative matters to help our democracy develop. The Speaker assured that the state would be spearheading legislative training to attain good governance and true development. He called on his colleagues in the Assembly to be more determined to record greater achievements than past legislative assemblies in Lagos and in other states. He said, As lawmakers, the time has come for us to gird our loins in our determination to successfully battle poverty and underdevelopment in the land and liberate our people.Apart from the fact that we must not leave any stone unturned in our efforts to perform our oversight functions on the Executive arm in order to make this assembly the most pro-people and pro-development Assembly in our great country. We must ensure that the 2012 budget is properly scrutinised and promptly approved.
