National Assembly to enact law on air safety

The National Assembly will enact a law towards safer airspace in Nigeria, the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, Mrs. Nkeriuka Onyejeocha, has said.A statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Metrological Agency, Mr. Evan Azinge, quoted the lawmaker as disclosing this when she led a delegation of the committee on an oversight visit to NIMET.She said through the process of legislation, the National Assembly could help to ensure that the airspace was safe for Nigerians and foreigners that flew within and out of the country.Onyejeocha said, The National Assembly will do everything possible in its capacity to make sure that the Nigerian airspace is safe for flying. So, we will enact laws that will ensure that our airspace is safe and also provide the Ministry of Aviation and its agencies with all the logistics required to make their operations effective.The only way the parliament can help the ministry is through enactment of laws and we are going to do that. I think NIMET is doing well, and they are on course.The Director-General, NIMET, Dr. Anthony Anuforom, while briefing the committee members on the activities of the organisation, said the agency had procured equipment to aid its weather monitoring operations and prevent air mishaps.He urged the Federal Government to incorporate the issue of weather in the process of national planning, adding that it was all encompassing.
