Published by Punch on Wed, 30 Nov 2011

The governments of Italy, Norway and Netherlands have donated gifts worth millions of naira to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons. The gift comprise furniture, medicalequipment, computers, water dispensers, beddings and a host of others for use by the Lagos zonal office of NAPTIP.The three countries gave the items under the auspices of International Organisation for Migration. In a statement on Monday, Executive Secretary of NAPTIP, Mrs. Jedy Agba, said the items donated were addition to the earlier donations made to the agency in March, 2010 by the same donors. She said the donation had helped the agency to carry out its statutory mandate of eliminating the scourge of human trafficking in Nigeria. These efforts have helped NAPTIP to eliminate the scourge of human trafficking in Nigeria and ensure rehabilitation of victims. They are transformed into productive members of the society through these donations, Agba said.Meanwhile, the Lagos zonal head of NAPTIP has called on stakeholders, relevant agencies and the private sector to lend their support to the humanitarian job.In a related development, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Lagos State branch, has donated materials to flood victims in Ebute-Meta and Makoko areas of Lagos. The branch Secretary, Mrs. Nweke Ijeoma, said they were in Makoko to carry out an environmental sanitation exercise. She said Red Cross was supporting the community with sanitation materials to enable the residents to get rid of mosquitoes. She said a similar exercise had been carried out on Park Road, Ebute-Meta, which was affected by floods few months ago.Nweke said the exercise was supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross through its national office in Abuja. She said the areas were identified by the society as the most vulnerable areas affected by the flood.Receiving the materials on behalf of the Makoko community, Dr. S.A Idowu, an official of the Community Development Association, commended the Red Cross for the gesture, promising that the community would use the items judiciously. Also, in Ebute-Meta, Chairman, Planning Committee, Confederation of Resident Associations, Mr. Matthew Okolo, appealed to the Lagos State Government to widen the small channel under the railway line in Olaleye and also to dredge the canal that stretches from Alaka Bus Stop to National Theatre area of the state. He said the association understood that the contract had been awarded for the dredging of the canal but nothing had been done since then.
