School children decry constant traffic gridlock

School children in the Iwofe, Egbelu and Elioparawo areas of Port Harcourt, Rivers State have complained of constant gridlock on the roads there.The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the bad state of the roads and the presence of articulated vehicles onthem in recent times have further compounded the traffic situation.Children whose schools are situated outside the areas spend several hours in traffic jam before getting to school.Some of them told NAN that they sometimes missed the first and second lessons of the day due to the delay.Miss Chike Onukuru said she often missed classes because of the traffic jam on the road leading to her school and blamed the situation on the state of the roads generally and the ``indecent culture'' of truck drivers on such roads.Another student, Uche Tasie, called on the state government to urgently begin the construction of the road which, she noted, was almost impassable during the rainy season.Tasie said: ``It is such a difficult situation; the road is in a bad state and drivers are not helping matters and we are the ones suffering.
