Why robbers, others kill policemen at check-points, by DIG

Published by Guardian on Wed, 30 Nov 2011

THE Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of 'F' Department, Mohammed Yesufu, has identified the poor attitude of policemen at duty posts as one of the reasons armed robbers and hoodlums kill them at check-points.Yesufu, while addressing officers and men of Akwa Ibom State Police Command at Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, said: 'How can a policeman on duty sit so relaxed, reading newspaper under a tree, the other would be inside a vehicle relaxing; tell me why robbers wouldn't open fire and kill all of them''The lackadaisical attitude of some of our men on duty posts calls for a serious change of attitude if this daily killing of our men must stop. It is always very shameful to hear about the killing of our men across the country without any response from them'.According to the DIG, 'Policing in Nigeria is a serious business. So, before you leave your house, pray to God to protect you from the hands of the wicked ones. Besides, if you are serious at your duty post, no robber or hoodlum will destroy you'.On indiscipline, which is prevalent in the force, he charged the officers and men to change their attitude, saying the new leadership of the police does not condone any act of indiscipline.'It is not going to be business as usual, we no more condone indiscipline in the force', he said. The DIG, who is on a working visit to Akwa Ibom State, observed that the issue of inadequate working tools has been the recurring complaint anywhere he went. He charged his men to use what they have to get what they want, adding that because of competing demands, the Federal Government may not be able to meet these demands at a go.He assured the policemen of the adequate incentive being worked out for them by the force headquarters, asking the officers and men to always take their work seriously.Earlier, Akwa Ibom State Police Commissioner, Solomon Arase, told the DIG of the constraints of the command, which include inadequate manpower, logistics, arms and ammunition. He added, however, that the in past three months since he took charge of the state, the citizens have been reassured of their safety.
