Kogi: Group deploys 800 observers

A coalition of civil society groups under the aegis of Project Swift Count has deployed 800 personnel to monitor Saturdays governorship election in Kogi State. The group made this public at a news briefing in Abuja on Wednesday. A member of the National Steering Committee of the project, Mr. Reuben James, told journalists in Abuja that the move was consistent with the groups set objective. He observed that with the successful observation of the voter registration and general elections, the group was now better prepared to observe the remaining set of elections. Rueben said, "Suffice it to say that our reports provided some credibility to the events. PSC deployed observers in the polling units in the country, using the swift count methodology. "Swift Count is an advanced election observer methodology which was first used in the Philippines in the 80s. The method involves the use of information and communication technology and statistical principles to enable observers provide more representatives and accurate information about the electoral process in real time to voters, political contestants and INEC." With funding from the USAID and DFID, the group also plans to monitor state elections in Adamawa, Bayelsa, Sokoto and Cross River states.
