Why we opposed Bode-George's appointment ' ACN

Published by Punch on Fri, 02 Dec 2011

The Action Congress of Nigeria has said it opposed the nomination of Mrs. Roli Bode-George into the National Population Commission because the party wanted the Federal Government to follow constitutional stipulations on such nominations. In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the clarification became necessary in view of the distortion of facts by some commentators who chose to trivialise what was a serious issue.Mohammed said the constitution was clear that appointments to such commissions as the NPC, which were for the federation must first be tabled for discussion at the National Council of State, in case governors from the states from which such appointments were being made may have any objection. He said, "When the President brought the issue of Bode-George to the National Council of State, the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, said he should be allowed to have an input into the nomination of his states representative in such an important commission as the NPC."The President asked the governor to put his objection into writing, which he did and forwarded to Mr. President."As we write, the President has yet to either acknowledge or respond to Fasholas objection."The party said if the views of governors on nominations and other issues concerning their states would not count, the National Council of State should be scrapped instead of being turned into a rubber stamp. The party added, "The attacks on the personalities of the three Senators from Lagos State who opposed Bode-Georges nomination are also mis-directed, since they did nothing wrong in opposing the nomination purely on constitutional ground."
