Published by Tribune on Sat, 03 Dec 2011

Vice-PresidentNamadi Sambo,on Thursday in Abuja, called on northern leaders to champion efforts at restoring peace in the region and the country in general. The vice-president made the call at the Northern Peace Conference organised by the Peoples Media Limited, publishers of the Peoples Daily newspaper.Represented by the Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Captain Caleb Olu-bolade (retd), Sambo said the Federal Government was appreciative of the role played by northern leaders in resolving the challenges. He said that government would no longer tolerate acts of indiscipline and lawlessness by any individual or group, noting that every Nigerian must be part of the peace building process.'The role of our northern stakeholders in addressing our emerging security challenges is hereby acknowledged. It is vital for the survival of our democracy that the North must continue to champion the cause of peace and progress of our coexistence.'A situation where some Nigerians take laws into their hands in the flagrant abuse of the rule of law and natural justice is completely unacceptable and should not be tolerated.'Government alone cannot do everything on its own. It needs the support of all and sundry. We therefore call on traditional rulers, the clergy, the organised private sector, senior citizens and all well-meaning individuals to participate in securing Nigeria for our children and those yet unborn,'Sambo noted. He further said that the present administration would continue to work on its Transformation Agenda in spite of the challenges of insecurity and paucity of fundsand commended the management of the Peoples Media Ltd., for organising the conference and choice of the topic which he said was timely.Earlier, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal, had tasked the conference to come up with valuable suggestions that would lead to the resolution of the crisis in the region.Tambuwal urged participants to be courageous in their pronouncements on the realities in the North and challenged them to restrategise in their quest for peace in the region.
