Katagum community demands school for girls

Published by Tribune on Sat, 03 Dec 2011

THE people ofKatagum in ZakiLocal Government Area of Bauchi State have called on the state government to establish a girls secondary school in the community to cater for the secondary education of their female children.Speaking with journalists at the local government secretariat recently, spokesman of the community, Mallam Aliyu Shehu Zaki, said the call became necessary as the community lacked one for now, adding that the community was lagging behind in the girl-child education.'We need a government girls secondary school in this community because we don't have one around that will cater for our children. We are lagging behind in the girl-child education, so we are, therefore, appealing to the state governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, to provide us with a modern girls secondary school in the area,' Mallam Zaki said.He explained that the situation had been incapacitating young girls in the area from acquiring formal education.According to him, 'most of us want to send our children to school but if you look at the implication of sending young girls far away to attend school, some parents will not have the rest of mind. Considering the situation in the country today with the resultant peer group influence, social vices and the level of immorality that demoralise every parent who wants to send his child to a far place. We need a secondary school for our girls child.'with this situation we are really finding it difficult.'He noted that the community was educationally backward, adding that 'if government will establish government girls secondary school in this area, it will give the girl-child the opportunity to acquire formal education.
