Community protests high PHCN bILLS

Published by Tribune on Sat, 03 Dec 2011

Electricity consumers in the IronaCommunity, Oye-Ekiti, who were victims of vandalised transformer between 13th October and 10th December, 2010, have asked the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) to withdraw the wrongful bills sent to them when their transformer was vandalised. The community said they had complained severally at the PHCN office in Oye-Ekiti and wrote a protest letter to the Ifaki Service Unit on July 29, 2011 to which the PHCN was yet to respond. In the protest letter, signed by Chief Omoniyi Ojo, Mr M.S. Oguntoye and High Chief Israel Bamisile, Chairman, Secretary and traditional head of Irona Quarters, respectively, the people said their PHCN bills since power was restored to them had been extra-ordinarily high 'only because they reflected the undue arrears' of the period of total blackout as a result of transformer vandalism. They said they had complained for seven months by July and had waited for another four months after the protest letter.Mr Oguntoye said the community had levied its members to make the PHCN restore service to them, stressing that the PHCN, rather than adjust their bills, had been forcing consumers to make N2,000.00 minimum monthly payments to defray the wrongful bills.
