Poverty, poor policy implementation responsible for insecurity ' Cleric

Published by Punch on Mon, 05 Dec 2011

The Senior Pastor of Global Harvest Church Intl, Pastor Victor Adeyemi, has listed poverty and poor implementation of government policies as major factors militating against security in the land.Adeyemi made this observation on Saturday during the inauguration of the Global Harvest Church, Outer Ring Road branch, Ibadan.According to him, the nation, in spite of its rich human and non-human resources, should be among the leading economies of the world. However, the cleric said, The security situation in the country is very unsettling for most Nigerians. Poverty remains the primary problem. If our people are well-fed, clothed and have the means to send their children to school they will not be so aggrieved against the government to the extent of fighting and killing people.Government should employ dialogue. While I am not saying that government should not try to defend with force, I guess the stick and carrot approach might be a little bit helpful. The government must not be seen as weak but must be strong and firm. The group that is inciting trouble are those whose ideology is very unreasonable. As a result of this, there might be a necessity to sit down and have meaningful discussion with them so that they can realise how unrealistic their objective is.Adeyemi said the call for the scrapping of Western Education was unrealistic and so should be discountenanced. If the terror group was not prevented from engaging in destructive acts, he said, they would end up killing more innocent people in the name of pressing home their demands.Warning that terrorism could not stop people from acquiring Western Education, he said, I believe that governments have been developing ineffective programmes. What Nigerians need really is not poverty alleviation but infrastructural development. Government should come up with policies that will enhance production.Seventy per cent of our land mass is arable. Why cant we go back to the land and produce foodfor local consumption and for export' Why cant we create incentives for the development of the Agro Allied industry to enhance the value of food products so that we can export and strengthen our currency'Adeyemi lamented Nigerias inability to manage its vast God-given resources.
