Farmer decries poor state of Ewulu/Ishiagwu road in Delta

Published by Tribune on Wed, 14 Dec 2011

A former Chairman, All FarmersAssociation of Nigeria (AFAN) in Delta State, Chief Jerry Ossai, has decried the poor state of Ewulu and Ishiagwu road in Aniocha South Local Government Area of the state.Ossai spoke with newsmen at the inauguration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Council of Elders in Ewulu , recently.According to him, Ewulu and Ishiagwu are purely agrarian communities and the poor state of the road leading to the communities made the transportation of their produce to the market a difficult task.'I have a 30-hectare farm here, maybe, one of the biggest farms in Delta State, but evacuating my goods to the market is the problem.'Ninety per cent of our people are farmers and 90 per cent of their products go bad because they cannot take them to the market,'' he lamented. He said that it was regrettable that since 1999 to date, many government officials, including serving and former governors of the state had visited the communities with promises to tar the roads but all to no avail. He explained that Ewulu is about eight kilometer from the Asaba/Ughelli road, while Ishiagwu is about three kilometers from Ewulu.'These roads are our greatest headache. If these roads are delivered, from Ewulu to Ishiagwu is only three kilometers but when we are going from here to Ishiagwu we have to go round and do about 15 kilometers.'So, whatever we are going to talk, this road is the bases of our agitation for the improvement in our lives.'We have called and called, Chief James Ibori had visited these roads, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan has visited these roads, but we are yet to see any result.'Almost all commissioners of works since 1999 have visited these roads and it was valued in the budget, but some how, nothing happened,'' Ossai said.
