Borno gov assures corps members of safety

Published by Punch on Thu, 15 Dec 2011

Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima has assured National Youth Service Corps members posted to the state of their safety throughout their service year. Borno has been engulfed in a string of violence, with Boko Haram claiming responsibility for the series of bombings and killings in the state, particularly the capital, Maiduguri. But Shettima urged the corps members not to be intimidated, saying the government had put in place all machinery needed for their comfort. The governor spoke during a visit to the NYSC Camp in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area, Benue State, where the Batch C corps members had their orientation, according to a statement on Wednesday by the state Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Mr. Inuwa Bwala. He told the corps members that the worst of the security challenges in the state was over and that they should come over and complement the government in its rebranding efforts. Shettima said, "We are conscious of our duties and obligations to you. We are aware of your expectations from us. I want to assure you that the government and good people of Borno state are prepared to make you safe, happy and comfortable. "We cannot compromise on your safety, and to this end we have put in place adequate machinery to safeguard your interests. We want to partner with you, and we expect you to be willing partners in our quest to reposition our dear state." He said the task of rebuilding Borno was a collaborative effort, saying the corps members were major stakeholders in that direction. He stressed that the security challenges that faced the state was a temporary setback and the state would rise from the ashes of that crisis to be great and peaceful again.
