No going back on PHCN privatisation -N/Assembly

Published by Tribune on Thu, 15 Dec 2011

THE National Assembly has saidthere is no going back on the privatisation of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) as it is the only way of addressing the power sector problem.Honourable Patrick Ikhariale, chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Power, said this during the committee's oversight visit to Kano. He, however, allayed the fear of workers of PHCN that the privatisation programme would lead to retrenchment, saying that rather, it would enhance their efficiency and create more job opportunities for Nigerians.Buttressing his argument on the gains of privatising the PHCN, the lawmaker said when the telecommunication sector was privatised, many people kicked against it, but it brought a lot of improvement to the country.'Prior to the privatisation of the telecommunication sector, NITEL was just like Alfa and Omega when it comes to the issue of communication, but with the chains of telecommunication companies, communication has been made easy for people.'This is similar to what we are going to enjoy when the power sector becomes privatised as it would open the channel for competition as well enhance efficiency and effectiveness in operation.Earlier, Alhaji Mohammed Tunde Balogun, the chief executive of PHCN in Kano had called on the National Assembly to, as a matter of urgency, enact a legislation that would curb the rampant cases of vandalisation of PHCN equipment.
