The Jos crisis and Nigeria's unity

Published by Tribune on Thu, 15 Dec 2011

DEAR President Jonathan, I had written and congratulated you since your election as Nigeria's President. You can be too sure that Ihave always cherished you since our days in politics in 1999, when by the Grace of God, you were Deputy Governor, Rt. Honourable Henneiken Lokpobiri was your Honourable Speaker and I was Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly and Rt Honourable Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi was also Speaker Rivers State House of Assembly and we all were meeting in Port Harcourt International Airport VIP Lounge. You are now the one who will save Nigeria's unity, otherwise you may end up being Nigeria's own Gorbachev. Why have I said this'History, influence by forces, will be either on your side or against you if you are not deceived. The number of Nigerians that voted for you and the trend of election was only reminiscent of Chief MKO Abiola's election. That shows you are the most popular of all our presidents in recent times.Your tenure incidentally falls within the prediction of the America's CIA on the future of Nigeria. This is the reason you must take the 'Boko Haram' uprising and the fight against corruption very seriously lest Nigeria collapses in your hands. Please, try to rationalise their demands. We must, however, be careful not to encourage the emergence of similar movements across the country, otherwise national security may be grossly affected in the long run.The survival of Nigeria and the continued unity of Nigeria depends on a number of variables some of which include quite a decisive onslaught against corruption and lack of respect for the rule of law.My dear president, many Nigerians now think we should formally embrace and imbibe corruption as 'Nigeria's culture.' This is dangerous and may torpedo your administration. Mr President, you must do something now!Let me draw Mr President's attention to the issue of removal of petroleum subsidy. I suggest that you tarry a while before taking a plunge because you cannot serve us a good cake, profoundly whet our appetite by stablising petrol and petroleum products, since your emergence only to turn around to tinker with the idea. No! Mr President don't do it now. It is another subterfuge! Remember, Nigerians gave you their votes mostly because of this fact.Again, by ordering the release of various probe panel reports since 1999, you will be strengthening and saving the unity of Nigeria. The continuous non-release of these probe panel reports, I should think, is contributory to the spate of insecurity in Nigeria. I have on several occasions written to you and the Attorney-General on the need to publish these reports. Mr President, if you need a court order of mandamus, I shall seek this remedy in court to compel you to order their release. Please, publish all the probe panel reports and let's have some 'fear and peace.' We have to be convinced that Nigeria is not the personal estate of some few individuals. Otherwise, do let us know where you want us ' the law - abiding Nigerians to go; and/or what you want us to do.Nigeria is our country ' the product of our heroes' past. The 30 months civil war was a struggle to preserve the unity of this country. Please, don't let this unity elude us in your time. You are an educated young man and we need the wisdom of a Ph.D holder, the strength of a young man and swimmer and the courage of a lion demonstrated in the critical area of our political economy.I wish you well and wish that God will permit you to leave some legacies as Chief Obasanjo did, notwithstanding that nobody of note who served in that regime, whether at the local government, state government and Federal Government levels, has been arrested, arraigned and meaningfully and diligently prosecuted. It is like we operate a system that permits: 'kill and bury' or 'steal and go'! Mr President, many Nigerians now think that you are not able to fight corruption because of your gentle, meek and kind disposition. Can you earnestly surprise your critics along this line' You are our President and we love you.History is beckoning on you! The way you keep us today, the direction you take us today, the height you place us today, the image you give us today, altogether will determine the tomorrow of Nigeria. Let nobody, let no section of the country including the South-South where you come, or the South-East where I come from or the North harass you. We have equal rights in this country by the 1999 Constitution. But rise up and fight corruption. Release the various probe panel reports and let us know those who are ready to make this country greater than what it is. Perhaps, those who are troublemakers now may be caught in the web or mesh.May I seek your leave to also release this piece to the media since it may not get to you through the right channel ' I mean, those who are around you who may claim they love you more than any other Nigerian and will not like you to read or see some mails such as this. We can talk more on your FaceBook. Nevertheless, I am proud of you!Thank you, Mr President.Chukwuddibia (KSC), wrote in from Owerri.
