Anambra Assembly extends tenure of council caretaker committees

Published by Guardian on Thu, 15 Dec 2011

ANAMBRA State House of Assembly yesterday extended by three months the tenure of the Caretaker Transition Committee Chairmen and members in the 21 local councils in the state. This extension may have put to rest the hope of conducting the earlier proposed council election this year following the expiration of the caretakers committees' six months tenure in office. The appointments of the council chiefs were also confirmed with a charge to the chairmen to try as much as possible to carry other members of the transition panels along in the governance of their areas. The extension of tenure came after Governor Peter Obi forwardeda letter containing the list of current transition committee membersfor confirmation on the renewal of their appointment to the House of Assembly that was read on the floor of the House by the Speaker yesterday. The Chairmen passed through tough screeningby the lawmakers before they were confirmed, andwere charged to be transparent, as well asattend their weekly meetings. The council chiefs were warned that if any negative report is received on any of them, it would lead to being summoned to appear before the House for necessary action.Harford Ikechukwu Oseke moved for confirmation of appointment of the Chairmen. He was seconded by Benson Nwawolu and the motion was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers. The Chairman of the chairmen, Chief Daza Udozor told journalistsin an interview that the confirmation of their appointments would rekindle their energy to work harder. Daza Udozor who is also the Transition Chairman of Njikoka Local Council expressed the hope that their new tenure would usher in better governance and development in the various councils. Also speaking, the Transition Emeka Afoka said he had embarked on many projects that touched the lives of the people.
