Oshiomhole asks labour to support power sector privatisation

Published by Punch on Fri, 16 Dec 2011

Edo State Governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, on Thursday in Benin, asked labour leaders to support President Goodluck Jonathans reform of the power sector because it was the only option left to make the country work.He told participants during the opening of the 9th delegates conference of the National Union of Electricity Employees that he was in support of the privatisation of the electricity firms. The NUEE, which comprises junior workers in the electricity sector, is the arrowhead of opposition to the privatisation of the 17 successor companies to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria.Oshiomhole, who is a former President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, asked his erstwhile colleagues to think through their current opposition to the reforms and adopt a strategy that would benefit the PHCN workers and the Nigerian people. It is high time union leaders (in the sector) eschewed selfish interest and embrace public interest for public welfare. This convention must, therefore, show the true character of the unions ideal, which among other things improves the quality of lives of its members and the general citizenry, he said.Oshiomhole, while addressing the Secretary General, NUEE, Mr. Joe Ajaero, implored him to think first of the welfare of the workers he was leading and the interest of the Nigerian people. He said, Ajaero, you must help Nigeria to return to a productive country. You should not look for the quick-fix solution but must look at the short, medium and long-term.
