Amnesty programme is successful ' Kuku

Published by Punch on Fri, 16 Dec 2011

The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, has said the amnesty programme for ex-militants in the area had achieved its objective.According to him, security and economic growth in the oil rich region has been reasonably achieved. He said the granting of amnesty and the implementation of the programme by the Federal Government administration had resulted in the cessation of hostilities in the Niger Delta. This, according to him, saved the country N6tn and prevented the economy from collapse. He stressed that before the granting, oil production, now 2.6 million barrels a day, dropped to a record low of 700 million barrels a day.Kuku said this when he hosted the House of Representatives Committee on the Niger Delta led by Mr. Warman Ogoriba at the Amnesty Offfice in Abuja on Thursday. The key objective of the amnesty is to stabilise, consolidate and sustain security conditions in the Niger Delta as prerequisite for promoting economic development in the area.Indeed, I make bold to assert that this target of restoring peace, safety and security in the Niger Delta using the instrumentalities of the Amnesty Programme has been reasonably met; and as a result, the nations economy has rebounded. From a paltry 700 barrels per day in the early weeks of 2009, the relative peace that now prevails in the Niger Delta has aided the remarkable growth of Nigerias oil production to 2.6 million barrels.
