Traffic gridlock grounds Onitsha

The two inter-agency task forces set up by the federal and the Anambra State governments on Thursday ordered the closure of all motor parks and markets around the Niger Bridge at Onitsha.The task forces moved into Onitsha, the gateway to the eastern part of the country, as vehicular traffic situation in the city worsened.Worst hit is the Headbridge area, where, since Wednesday, motorists have been spending several hours at both the Onitsha and Asaba ends of the bridge before crossing over.The heavy traffic around the bridge head, Upper Iweka, Owerri Road and the Ziks Roundabout are usually stress points for motorists.The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Ayobami Omiyale, heads the task force set up by the state, while that of the Federal Government is led by Mr. Emmanuel Onu, the Federal Road Maintenance Engineer, Anambra State.
