Jonathan launches armed forces emblem

Published by Tribune on Fri, 16 Dec 2011

PRESIDENTGoodluckJonathan, on Thursday, formally launched the Armed Forces Emblem Appeal Fund towards the February 15, 2012 Armed Forces Remembrance Day with a call on Nigerians to support former members of the armed forces for their sacrifice to the fatherland.Speaking during the ceremony which took place at the Defence College, Abuja, Jonathan also pledged the commitment of his government to tackle the problems relating to pension and gratuity of the war veterans. He explained that the emblem launch was in appreciation of the 'sacrifices of our ex-service men who sacrificed their lives in defence of our territorial integrity and for other nations.'Jonathan observed that the commonwealth and other nations celebrate the remembrance day on November 11 of every year when governments and the armed forces mourn soldiers who died during the Second World War and other operations around the world but, Nigeria chose to celebrate it on January 15.According to him. 'it is a worthy cause and a befitting legacy when we celebrate our soldiers. It is a sober period when we remember our departed heroes; when we appreciate their sacrifice in making us all enjoy peace, stability and comfort.'I wish to call on you as good citizens of this great country to reciprocate the sacrifices made by our departed veterans by donating generously for the welfare of these veterans some of who are with us and are too old to fend for themselves and for those who have died to make an upkeep for their families.
