Omisanjana residents protest poor condition of road

Published by Tribune on Fri, 16 Dec 2011

Youths of 132KVA Omisanjana Road area of Ado Ekiti recently barricaded the road and caused a major breach over what they said was the neglect of the road by the Ekiti State government. The youth, as early as 6:00 a.m. on Monday, blocked the road with logs and stood in groups, preventing school children and other residents of the community from moving in or out of the street for about three hours. It was gathered that the angry residents took the step following what they claimed was 'the indecision of the government on the road and its neglect.'They said the state government awarded the road to contractors in November last year shortly after it assumed office and wondered why it had not been completed over a year after.According to some of the residents, their anger stemmed from what they said was 'the frequent changing of the contractors handling the road.'They said this had delayed the completion of the road and created hardship for the residents of the street.A landlord in the area, who wanted to remain anonymous, said 'in November last year, a contractor moved in and started work. Since then, the road has been uncompleted and there are no signs of that in the near future because of the pace of work and frequent changing of the contractors.'He said 'heavy dust has been afflicting the residents of the community and accidents are now a frequent occurence there,' adding that 'motorcycles and other vehicles now dread to come to the area following the condition of the road.'He said 'We are also at the risk of ailments such as cattarh and ashtma because of the enormity of the dust.'According to him, the protest was 'consequent upon the okada and car accidents, as well as the health risks the residents faced,' adding that 'they blocked the roadat about 6am and remained there for about four to five hours.'According to him, no officials of the company came, saying that the protest was peaceful 'and did not warrant the deployment of policemen.
