Travel Digest

Published by Guardian on Sun, 18 Dec 2011

STRANGE occurrences have been observed when people make trips from Lagos to Abia, Warri to Jos, Abuja to Ghana, Abuja to London, Lagos to Germany or any other popular route and destination for the celebrations. It is also very easy to take ill when you travel abroad. However, contrary to popular opinion, travel tips can be applied for local or international trips or any journey that takes up to four hours requires careful planning. Some people have linked travels abroad to witchcraft attacks, especially for people who lose their lives in the process shortly after travel. It is not impossible to develop breathlessness or chest pain, which could be fatal. This problem can be tied to poor planning before the trip, especially on what is expected during the trip, and it is easy to disregard some of these tips, particularly if you a habitual flyer.Remember the last time you did up to six hours to get to a holiday destination, the odds are that you sat or slept all through this journey.Sitting helps to keep some blood within the vessels and compartments in your legs. Blood, which is a rich medium, stays on for a while, and then starts to clot.Diabetics, obese, terminally ill individuals and pregnant women are prone to clot much more than the ordinary population.Benefits of exercise, such as moving your legs, which could just be a trip to the toilet as often as possible, cannot be over-emphasised in preventing stasis and clot formation.Drink plenty of water, avoid drinking alcohol to prevent dehydration and wearing stockings could improve circulation and reduce and clot formation. After your trip, walk up and down for a while. If you experience chest pain or difficult breathing after any trip, you should consider visiting your doctor, and remember to mention your recent trip.Prescriptions and medications must be taken as at when due, even when you are travelling.Carrying your doctor along by informing him/her of your travel plans might prove helpful, especially if you are been managed for a condition.Anyone who has suffered ear pain while flying would know that it could be extremely painful and uncomfortable. But simple remedies, such as sucking sweets, taking a drink, yawning and chewing during descent of the plane can be very helpful. The pain would not disappear simply because you are sleeping; you need to be awake to suck, swallow and make movements that encourage air to get into your ears. One old trick is a three-step mechanism that is extremely helpful.First, pinch your nose with your fingers after taking a breath in, close your mouth, and then force yourself to breath out. These three steps, commonly known as a Valsalva maneuver, makes up ears go pop and can be repeated intermittently.Ordinary painkillers could help relieve pain if it continues after the flight, but should clear in a few days. The smell of petrol or food, drinking alcohol, reading, and repeated movement, whether you are travelling by train, buses, plane or boat can make your feel really sick.Children or adults who have experienced this would surely understand the ill feeling this could cause. If you notice a passenger by you looking ill, you can offer the person help. Make a seat close to the window and open the windows for fresh air.Alcohol and heavy meals can also bring on motion sickness, so avoid them before you travel.Motion sickness can be helped by closing your eyes. You can reduce the amount of motion by choosing your seat during the travel.Seats in the front of the car or on the plane wing or on the deck of a boat are choice seats to reduce motion sickness.Motion sickness and jetlag are some of the problems with high flying. To stay on top this season into the New Year requires some effort.Planning your trip to reach your destination mid-afternoon, rather than in the middle of the night, is useful in reducing jetlag. On arrival, it is not helpful to entertain the idea of falling asleep to rest, because it makes readjusting more difficult. Some people just keep to the time at their base, which could also be a good idea.Really, the best thing to do when changing time zones might be as simple as catching enough rest before the trip, sleep on the plane and dim the flights while you fly. Those doing transfer flights with delays at the airport would find it refreshing to have a quick freshen up at the airport, especially if you are entitled to a lounge facility.Apart from helping tidy your looks, it also gives the feeling that you are fresh for a new start. There are many other salient issues concerning flying, go to givinghandsla.blogspot.com for more information.
