One dies as fleeing lover pours acid on family of four

Published by Punch on Tue, 20 Dec 2011

An electronics technician identified simply as Sunny on Saturday poured acid on a couple and two of their daughters while sleeping at their 8, Akpasak Street residence in Afaha Nsit, Nsit Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The victims are Aaron (father); Mercy (mother); Enobong and Aniete (daughters). While the mother and daughters are still writhing in pains in a hospital, their father died as a result of the severity of the acid attack before he could get to hospital.Their sin, according to Sunny, was that they aborted the pregnancy which 23-year-old Enobong was carrying for him despite earlier warning to them not to do so.PUNCH METROlearnt that Sunny had been a long time friend of the family since Aaron was an employee of Michelin Rubber Estate, Utagbuno, Delta State.Sunny, a native of Oronigbe village in Edo State, also lived in the Delta community with Aaron at that time and courted the friendship of the family. It was learnt that Sunny, who is married and has three children, had had his eyes on Enobong since then. But after Aaron retired from Michelin in 2009, he moved his family to his village in Afaha Nsit. This, however, did not deter Sunny who had professed his love for Enobong. A year after the family relocated, Sunny also visited the Akwa Ibom community.Initially, the family thought Sunnys appearance was just a mere visit not knowing that like them, the electronics technician had also decided to relocate to the community. He lived in Aarons compound and repaired electronics as a trade.Although there were conflicting reports from Aarons family, it was learnt that Enobong became pregnant for Sunny. But Aarons family did not like the idea and aborted it.This, our correspondent learnt, infuriated Sunny, who had earlier warned Aaron not to abort the pregnancy.Around 2am on Saturday, Sunny left his room, made a surreptitious entrance into the room through the window where Aaron and his family were sleeping and poured acid on them. Our correspondent was at Qua Iboe Church Leprosy Hospital, Ekpene Obom, Etinan Local Government Area of the state in company with the Divisional Police Officer, Effiong Udo, and President, Joint Youth Council, Afaha Nsit, Nsit Ibom LGA, Mr. Ifreke Abel, where the victims are being treated.Although Enobong admitted that Sunny had been wooing her since she was in Delta State with her family, she denied having an affair with him.She said, Sunny has always been disturbing me. He told me that his wife had left him with the three children she had for him, and that one of them was dead.I have never succumbed to his pressure. My family and I always sleep in one room together so that Sunny would not have a chance to make any advances to me while I sleep.Asked whether there was a problem, which could have prompted Sunny to pour acid on the family, Enobong insisted there was nothing except what she narrated to our correspondent. But when he was called on the phone, Sunny, who has fled the community, said he came to Akwa Ibom purposely to marry Enobong. He said he wanted to marry Enobong because he felt she would made him happy and could curtail some of his strange behaviour.Sunny said his conviction that Enobong would make him happy made him to abandon his family in Edo State and to begin a new life in Akwa Ibom.He said, Since Enobongs father retired from Michelin Rubber Estate, he has not been working. I repair electronics to ensure that his family eat and live well.I have been having quarrels with my customers after collecting advance payment from them. Rather than using the money to carry out repair works, I used the money to buy food items for the family. My customers would descend on me, curse and report me to everybody in the community. The first time Enobong took in for me, I asked them not to abort the pregnancy, they went ahead and aborted it, the second and third time, the family did the same thing. So, this last one I told them that if anyone abort the pregnancy, they would pay for itthey did abort it and the consequence followed.Sunny said since the family would not allow him to marry Enobong, all his efforts had been fruitless.A youth leader in the community, Abel, confirmed that Sunny was always running into problems with his customers for not repairing their electronics on time after collecting part of the money he charged. He said each time Sunny was asked to give an accounts of the advance he got from customers, he always claimed he had used the money to cater for Enobongs family. But Enobongs mother, Mercy, said rather it was her family that took care of Sunny. She said she was worried when Sunnys visit became permanent. She said, I thought he was only going to stay for two days. But when he continued to stay with us, I asked if he was not going back to his place, he said no.I advised him to rent his own room and shop so that he could conduct his business if he wanted to live in Afaha Nsit. He did rent his own room but never went to live there. All my children were born in the presence of Sunny. I dont see how Sunny would come and marry Enobong, whom he is like a father to. They had never had sexual relations and my daughter never got pregnant for anybody. It is a lie. When contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, said the suspect would soon be arrested.
