NAFDAC warns supermarket operators in Enugu

Published by Tribune on Tue, 20 Dec 2011

THE National Agencyfor Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned operators of supermarkets and provision stores in Enugu about selling expired products or those without the agency's registration number. The South-East Acting Zonal Director, Mr Udekpo Ekpo, stated this during a one-day consultative and sensitisation meeting NAFDAC organized for the Supermarkets and Provision Stores Traders Association in Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State.Ekpo who was represented by the Chief Regulatory Officer, Mr Ikechukwu Okoye, said that the meeting was aimed at educating members of the association on the need to be in a union to synergise with NAFDAC in the fight against fake and adulterated drugs in the area.He advised members of the association to make sure that any locally produced products was registered.According to him, any product about to be expired should be displayed in a visible area in time with reduced price for timely consumption. The acting zonal head called operators to insist on collecting receipts and sellers' address while the dates of expiration should be properly checked. On the 'Guidelines for Global Listing of Supermarket items', Mr Emeka Orajika, a Senior Regulatory Officer in the agency, said that global listing was a package which NAFDAC created for supermarkets' owners to make sure that they would not necessarily register all the products in their shops, noting that 'if you must enlisting under global listing, then locally produced products must be sourced from the manufactures.'Items to be listed shall include food and cosmetics regulated by the agency sold in supermarkets/stores and such other specialties as required by hotels and international rganisations.'He said that NAFDAC was committed to safeguarding the health of the nation and would continue to make the nation's markets safe for unsuspecting buyers to get quality and unadulterated drugs for consumption. In his specch, the Chairman of Enugu State Supermarket and Provision Stores, Chief Nnadi Frank, thanked NAFDAC for its work, pledging the association preparedness to partner with the agency to make sure that only genuine products were sold in supermarkets in the state.
