Boko Haram: Hafiz Ringim deserves commendation, not condemnation

Published by Nigerian Compass on Tue, 20 Dec 2011

Ndigbo Unity Forum calls on every Nigerian to rise up and condemn the actions of the group which calls itself Boko Haram. It is not proper for any body or group to go about killing and bombing his fellow citizens and destroying of properties in the name of religion. Now, if economic deprivation as claimed by Northerners is the cause, our question is this: What do they have to say about the Igbo who have been marginalised, since the end of Civil War in 1970 till date' Both military and civilian have perfected the act of treating the Igbo with disdain, promising to redress the imbalance in the distribution of the common wealth that has always been skewed against the zone, only to worsen the deprivation that has been the lot of the people. Their region was plundered and laid waste by Nigerian soldiers during the Civil War between 1967 and 1970. Today, there is no meaningful development in the South-East. We bear it without taking arms and bomb to kill or destroy anybody or government properties and other strategic areas. And now, the Northern leaders are pointing at the economic angle as reason for this group doing everything possible to make the country ungovernable for President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. We call on the federal government to equip the police and other security agencies to tackle this terrorist group whose demand is total madness and something that should not be given a second thought because Nigeria is a secular state so nobody or group can turn it into Islamic country as demanded by Boko Haram. Today, Boko Haram is using sophicated weapons and the major targets include important places both in government agencies like Barracks, Nigeria Police headquarters and other places. NUF wishes to disagree with those calling for the sack of Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim over the bomb attacks at police headquarters and United Nations Buliding by Boko Haram. The call is irresponsible because when terrorists bombed World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001 in New York, over 6,000 people were killed. No one called for sacking of U.S. F.B. I. Chief or other security chiefs. Rather, they all rallied round them and gave them the necessary support for them to succeed. NUF calls on the federal government to compensate those whose property were destroyed and their relations killed in Boko Haram terrorist attacks. It is the duty of the government to protect lives of the citizens. We commend the action taken so far by Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima on the issue. Let all the security agencies arrest this ugly situation in the country, because investors will come to only where there are no violence and killing.Augustine ChukwudumPresident Ndigbo Unity Forum08063975566,046848753
