Control your dog's noise with anti-barking apparatus

Published by Punch on Wed, 21 Dec 2011

GBENGA ADENIJI explores the world of anti-barking kits designed to mute irritating noise from dogsSome individuals keep dogs to ward off unwanted persons from their homes while others do so because they fancy keeping pets. But at times, barking of dogs can be very irritating especially when one needs a quiet ambience or craves privacy. There are, however, some remote, sound-emitting anti-barking devices which are, basically, noise-blasting apparatus powered either by batteries or AC power. The devices have built-in sensors that react to a barking dog nearby by releasing a piercing, high-pitched sound. Each time the sound is let out, the rate at which a dog barks is reduced considerably. Some of the anti-bark kits are attached on a platform in such a way that there will be no obstacle between the device and the dogs ear. This is because there is a great possibility that obstaclesbuildings, fences, etcmay prevent the device from having the desired effect on the animal. It is thus recommended that one mounts the device up high, facing the direction or compound where the dogs with the piercing barks are tethered or left to roam. The Bark Stop is said not to inflict pain or harm on a noisy dog. It is placed on a table, counter or mounted outdoors. The tool has twin dual piezo-ceramic transducers and a specially designed speaker which picks up a dogs bark and then sends out a counteractive tone to keep ones family or neighbours sleeping soundly. It is also capable of emitting two very irritating sounds, one that is audible only to dogs and another that can be heard by both dogs and humans.Bark Stop has an automatic turn-on when barking starts and turns off when barking ends. The tool is also imbued with an audible sound selector designed to help one determine the best sound frequency for preventing barking from ferocious dogs. There is also the durable, waterproof Petsafe Big Dog Bark Control Collar which keeps a dog from barking irritatingly all through the night. The device contains a vibration sensor that ensures the collar will respond only to the barking of ones dog. This gadget comes with 10 levels of Light-Touch correction which automatically adjust ones dog temperament, starting from the lowest level. If the dog repeats its barking, the correction increases to the next highest level. A safety feature thus shuts off the correction for three minutes, if the dog barks for more than 15 times in 30 seconds. The lightweight micro-collar makes sure it adjust to neck sizes up to 34 inches. As a rule, the Collar is recommended not to be used for more than eight hours at a time. It also has RFA-188 and an ID tag ring including a 2-colour LED which shows each time the battery is getting low. This device is said not to require any receiver collar to put any barking dog in check. All that is required of one is to clutch the device or rest it on any table or standing object. If ones dog barks, the device will activate a harmless 2-second ultrasonic tone which only the dog can hear. In whatever style that suits one, the kit can be set to activate automatically or manually. From time to time, the dog will learn to associate the exasperating noise with its barking. Besides working up to 25 feet of the dog, the tool requires a 9-volt alkaline battery to perform effectively.Besides all these, there is the Ultra PET training device which is a hand held device believed to be essentially reliable in the training and conditioning of ones dog or cat.As Dogworld.com notes, the tool is a harmless, humane high frequency sound clearly audible to dogs and cats but barely perceptible to humans. It notes, This sound helps emphasise verbal commands to improve a pets response, or can be used as a stimulus alone to initiate a conditioned response. It can also be used as an interrupter to improper behaviour. It will not induce proper behaviour and works best when used in conjunction with proper, proven and effective training techniques. The training device gives the best performance when pointed toward the pet from a distance of 5 to 20 feet away. All one needs to do is to press the button for one or two seconds while giving the desired verbal command and repeat as necessary until the pet responds to the desired command. However, its inventors note that the apparatus cannot work with deaf pets for they naturally will not respond to any given command.Above all, experts advise that it is important to check before buying any of the devices in order to confirm whether the reason for the excessive barking of a particular dog is not due to ill health or lack of care.Online sources, which state that dogs sometimes bark due to lack of food or water, add that the lack of exercise or companionship, either from other dogs or from one as the owner, can also be responsible. Thus, before one seeks the aid of anti-barking devices to check irritating noise from dogs, it is best to contact a veterinary doctor for advice. Most of the tools can be sourced online.
