Don advises wives of LG bosses on babies health

Wives of local government chairmen in Edo State have been advised to strive to make their local government areas baby-friendly.Professor Michael Ibadin, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), University of Benin Teaching Hospital, made the call in Benin City, in an interview with newsmen, on Sunday.He said the criteria to be met by a local government before being designated as baby-friendly, were the same criteria hospitals met before being designated as ``baby- friendly.The CMD announced that any local government designated baby friendly would attract a lot of assistance and support from development partners.He noted that putting measures in place to meet the 10 steps of successful breast-feeding was one of the components of baby- friendly hospitals.He called for the promotion of such measures to make more local governments baby-friendly in the state, saying that breast-feeding  improves the nutritional status of babies and helps in the reduction of infant mortality.He remarked that the problem in the health sector was not due to existing health policies, noting that even unauthorised persons operate health institutions like maternity homes.
