Summit group head seeks scrapping of security votes

Published by Guardian on Tue, 17 Jan 2012

THE chairman of Ondo State Economic Summit Group (OSEG), Mr. Banji Alabi, has called for the scrapping of security votes for the President, governors and council chairmen, as part of efforts to ensure judicious use of scarce resources in the country.Alabi also called for the 'deregulation of the National Assembly' to make it part-time. He equally called for drastic reduction in the lawmakers' salaries and allowances in line with the belt-tightening measure being sought by the Presidency.Alabi, in a statement at the weekend, said these measures needed to be taken by the government to convince Nigerians that the government was honest and serious in its desire to save money to grow the economy. He further noted that the measures would also serve as some of the steps to promote good governance, which Nigerians were clamouring for.The statement titled: 'Message to the President', Alabi said: 'Mr. President, while I do not say that the foregoing are the only ways we can avoid some level of chaos in the nearest future, I make bold to say that they form the minimum requirement/demand towards ensuring peace in this country and the beauty of these suggestions is that we do not need to go through the long process of constitutional amendment, we can adopt the 'The Doctrine of Necessity' to deal with the menace and your name will go down in history as a great leader. Please act now'.
