Rivers lawmakers clear two commissioners-nominee

Published by Guardian on Tue, 17 Jan 2012

THE Rivers State House of Assembly yesterday screened and cleared two additional commissioner-nominees sent to them by Governor Chibuike Amaechi. The nominees formed the third batch of the cabinet members. They include Mr. Emeka Nwogu from Omuma Council and Mr. Samuel Eyiba from Ahoada Council of the state.Nwogu was a member of the state House of Assembly between 1999 and 2007 when Amaechi was the Speaker of the House.Commencing the screening, the lawmakers did not field any question to Nwogu before clearing him, giving reasons that as a former member of the House, he had the privilege to take a bow.But Eyiba's screening took a different shape as the lawmakers noted that his documents were not straight. In his findings, the member representing Akuku-Toru Constituency I, Mr. Anabraba Fredrick, identified that the nominee's documents were inconsistent, pointing out that his certificates indicated that he was in two schools in the same year. Also, the member representing Eleme Constituency, Mr. Josiah Olu, noted that Eyiba's taxes were not appropriately paid, while Victoria Nyeche, the member representing Port HarcourtConstituency I, urged the nominee to go back and reconcile his documents.Though Eyiba could not defend his documents before the lawmakers, a member representing Gokana Constituency, Mr. Innocent Barikor, pleaded with the lawmakers to consider the nominee following hishard work and steadfastness.Speaking, the House Leader, Mr. Chidi Lyold, said following the anomalies and inconsistencies in Eyiba's documents, he ought to be handed over to the security personnel for prosecution. The House Leader, however, appealed to the House to clear him considering the fact that he was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which serves as a party to all the lawmakers.Based on the appeal, the lawmakers, however, cleared the two nominees. In his ruling, the Speaker, Mr. Otelemaba Amachree, said the House thereby confirmed the commissioner-nominees.
