THE virulent attacks on Nigeria as a result of the recently passed bill, criminalising same' sex marriage in the country by the Senate seem not to be abating.WHILE the country has maintained a mature and philosophical calmness in the face of provocative intervention in the nation's internal affairs by some western nations, the pronouncement of the head of European Union delegation to Nigeria, Ambassador David Mac Rae, which reflects the official position of European countries on the bill, cannot be ignored.THE diplomat, who during a media luncheon in Abuja expressed the perceived fear of EU countries on the same'sex bill said that the 'EU is concerned about the consequences of the bill', noting that it would cause serious conflicts with various human rights conventions to which Nigeria is a signatory. He maintained that the bill would jeopardise 'freedom of association', insisting that sexual orientation is a private matter and that the rights of the individuals must be respected.WE need to commend the diplomatic decorum of Ambassador Mac Rae for acknowledging the cultural repulsion of Nigerians for gay practice and lesbianism, as against the gunboat diplomatic tactics of Canada, which bordered on intimidation as evinced by its threat to sustain opposing Nigeria at all international forums until the bill is repealed.IN fact, the infantile and tactless style of the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, who still revels in colonial paradigm with his choice of the carrot and stick approach through the threat of aid severance to Nigeria, because of the anti-gay bill as if Nigeria's economic relationship is not symbiotic, is laughable. This insult to the nation's sovereignty has more than ever before emboldened Nigerians never to trade off their cherished dignity and solid cultural values for a mess of porridge.IT is even shocking and strange that the United States of America (USA), which subtly threatened the country on the bill, has only six out of its 50 states legalising same'sex marriage with one of the six pro-gay states considering a repeal of the act, despite its liberal attitude to morality.WHILE we respect the right of any country to pass whatever legislation promotes the well-being and culture of its people as demonstrated by the recently passed sodomy bill by the U.S. Senate which permits members of the American armed forces to have sex with animals, especially horses, we regard the studied silence of animal rights activists on this bill which encumbered the rights of animals (especially when viewed from the perspective of animals' inability to express their consent to mating with human beings) as not only wicked, but vividly demonstrative of an inexcusable act of bestiality.THE arguments of the same'sex apologists that sexual relationship between two adults is purely a private affair is not only hypocritical but also stands logic on its head. It is obvious that human beings are guided generally by norms, values and conventions which insulate them from falling into an animal kingdom where incivility and relational anomie reign supreme. To allow the sexual perverts in the society to have their way under the veil of human rights, is an assault on Nigeria's religious and cultural values. It may not be long when those with incestuous, polyandrous and bestial sexual orientation would troop to the streets to demand for their 'rights', if the tribe of these sexual deviants is not quickly checkmated.WHILE it is not our intention to celebrate mythologies, it is a historical fact that the awesomely powerful Roman empire commenced its descent into the bottomless pit of infamy and imperial irrelevance with the first same-sex marriage of Emperor Nero in 27 B.C when he gleefully and legally married two men in a flamboyant ceremony. It is sad indeed that humans, by nature, are allergic to the lessons of history.THE latest official declaration of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) ' The umbrella body for all medical practitioners in Nigeria ' cannot have come at a more appropriate time. The NMA release provided a medical validation to the health risk inherent in homosexuality. Its national president, Dr Omede Idris, in a press conference in Abuja, highlighted the hazard posed to health management by same-sex relationships and, therefore, warned against liberalising the practice.WE call on the National Assembly members not to succumb or be intimidated by the hypocritical campaign of some western countries which jealously protect their values but at the same time pollute same when not destroying other cultures.GAYNESS is a Western scourge with devastating antecedents. It is alien to the African cultural, social and religious values. It must be vehemently resisted no matter the carrot and stick antics of the Western powers.
