Corps members want Ikuru health centre revitalised

Published by Tribune on Wed, 25 Jan 2012

Some National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in Ikuru, Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, have called on the state government to improve health facilities in coastal communities. The NYSC members told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ikuru that it was a health risk residing in the Island without adequate health care services. They decried the poor state of the community health centre, saying that it lacked drugs and had only a nurse and ward maid as medical personnel. The corps members said that the health centre found it difficult to render quality service as it lacked the manpower to run night shifts in the centre.Mr John Agam said he narrowly escaped death when he had dysentery at 10p.m and was rushed to the health centre but there was no one to attend to him.'Night emergencies are rather handled with prayers or by application of local herbs as it is the practice in the area which to me is dangerous.'Another corps member, Miss Helen Ekwuche, said 'the common man should, at least, be able to access primary health care in coastal communities as Nigeria strives to attend its millennium goals.' Mr Badmus Rasheed, commended the Federal Government on the mass transit scheme but said that such scheme was much needed in the riverside communities, especially for emergency cases outside the community. He called on the state government to provide boats for the people to enable patients in the area transport in cases requiring medical attention in a hospital.
