Uduaghan moves to cut governance cost

Published by Guardian on Wed, 25 Jan 2012

GOVERNOR Emmanuel Uduaghan has charged public office holders in Delta State to support the drive to reduce the cost of governance in line with the reality of the times. Uduaghan, who spoke on the state- owned Delta State Broadcasting Service (DBS) radio chat yesterday in Asaba, the state capital, explained that even before the agitation for reduction in the cost of governance heightened, he had personally taken steps to reduce the cost by cutting down on the number of aides and cars that accompanied him on official assignments. He said: 'In terms of reduction in cost of governance that people complain about, I want to say that I, in fact, started from my own workers. I have cut down on the number of people appointed and the number of vehicles that follow me on trips. My position is that I should first of all start from myself in cutting down cost of governance, and I want every other public official to do same'.Uduaghan, who expressed disagreement with calls for fresh increase in minimum wage, said individuals should make adjustments in their expenditure patterns. He also said that with the 'new cut tax legislation' signed by President Goodluck Jonathan, civil servants would have more money to spend.According to him, the first thing for people to do as individuals is to take a critical look at themselves and cut down on their spending as it is not only governments that usually spend much money.'Now that President Goodluck Jonathan has signed a new tax law that will make workers pay less tax', Uduaghan said he had since instructed his officials to get a copy of the document, promising that his administration would be among the first to implement it.
