Senator, others urge govt to tackle Boko Haram

Published by Guardian on Wed, 25 Jan 2012

THE Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on National Planning, Economic Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin, yesterday called for more decisive and collective actions against the menace of the Boko Haram sect.In the same vein, the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) has urged the Federal Government to halt the killings of innocent and hapless Nigerians by bringing perpetrators of the dastardly acts to book.Reacting to last weekend's multiple bombings and gun attacks in Kano and Bauchi states, which claimed hundreds of lives and property worth several millions of naira, Senator Lanlehin said it was time for all stakeholders to rise to the challenge with a view to working out a lasting solution to the insurgency, which he noted, was becoming more intractable and dangerous to the wellbeing of the country. The senator, representing Oyo-South Senatorial District in a statement by his media assistant, Olawale Sadare said: 'The gory pictures of charred remains of innocent people killed everyday in various attacks by suspected Boko Haram terrorists leave much to be desired. People across the globe get to see all these acts of barbarism on satellite television stations every now and then, even as it is becoming more embarrassing to us as a people that the trend continues unabated'.TMG, on its part, said the spate of killings and bombings should be of serious concern to the government. In a related development, the Inter-Religious Council of the University of Ilorin has urged the Federal Government to halt the porosity of Nigerian borders in order to tackle the Boko Haram menace. The council, under the chairmanship of Prof. Gabriel Olatunji yesterday after an emergency meeting, said: 'Government should protect more effectively our porous borders through which the Boko Haram aliens infiltrate the country.' 'Government should put under strict security surveillance Boko Haram Nigerian sympathisers and collaborators who regard themselves as sacred cows'.
