Ambassador Mbu dies in London

A Nigerian lawyer, politician, diplomat and a fixture in Nigerian political affairs for more than 50 years, Ambassador Matthew Tawo Mbu, is dead.Ambassador Mbu died in a London hospital at the age of 82 years. Born on November 20, 1929, the late politician began his political career with his membership of parliament from 1952 to 1955 and served his country in various capacities, including Federal Minister of Labour, 1954; High Commissioner to the United Kindgom (UK), 1952 to 1959; representative of Nigeria, Washington DC, United States, 1966 and was the youngest Nigerian ever to serve in the federal cabinet. Between 1960 and 1966, Mbu returned to serve again in the parliament.He was appointed chairman, Eastern Nigeria Public Service Commission in 1967, before he became member, constituent assembly from 1977 to 1978. He was the first national vice chairman of the Nigeria People's Party of Nigeria from 1981 to 1983.On many occasions, Ambassador Mbu represented Nigeria as an ambassador to foreign countries, including recently, ambassador to Germany. He also served as the pro-chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.He served as Foreign Minister from January to November 1993 and was the leader of the South-South Peoples Assembly (SSP), a non-political organisation.
