Copa America Results 2015: Group Tables, Schedule Post-Argentina vs. Uruguay

Published by Bleacher Report on Wed, 17 Jun 2015

The Copa America moves along as Group B takes in its second matches of the tournament with the famous sides of Argentina and Uruguay facing off Tuesday night.Paraguay and invitees Jamaica, the other two sides of Group B, served as a warm-up for the heavyweight tilt.Continue for full updated tables and a recap of both of Tuesday's game from Chile.Copa America Group TableGroup-Stage FixturesParaguay 1, Jamaica 0After a comeback win to draw Argentina in their first match, Paraguay's good vibes continued after their 1-0 win over Jamaica. The game-winner came in the 36th minute from Edgar Benitez, who showed that following the play and being in the right place at the right time makes you capable of winning games. With a long ball delivered by Victor Caceres in no man's land between the 18-yard box and Jamaica's back line, Jamaican keeper Duwayne Kerr left his goal to attempt to clear the ball. His header was sent straight down to the feet of the on-rushing Benitez and was chipped over his head, rolling into the back of the net for the game's only goal. The winner was well deserved for Paraguay, who dominated most of the match, especially in the first half through Roque Santa Cruz's inspired play leading to three efforts on Kerr's goal. ESPN FC's Adrian Melville knew Jamaica was in trouble.Paraguay had a second goal ruled offsides in the beginning of the second half and was later followed by great chances from Caceres and Miguel Samudio. Caceres' shot was saved well by Kerr, while Samudio's shot hit the crossbar and stayed out.Jamaica is all but eliminated, as they have yet to record a single goal in the tournament, while Paraguay looks set to take on the quarterfinals at four points.Argentina 1, Uruguay 0The last time Uruguay defeated Argentina in the group stage of the Copa America was in 1967 in Uruguay. They will have to wait a little longer after a 1-0 Argentina victory thanks to Sergio Aguero. The two most successful countries in Copa America history, Uruguay has 15 titles and Argentina has 14. It was Argentina, though, that dominated the opening. While Lionel Messi and Aguero attempted to carve their way through the Uruguayan defense, they were unable to find an opener.Uruguay was absorbing plenty of Argentinian pressure, but they were doing a good job quelling them from their usual attack. A side that likes to dissect a defense from the center of the field, Uruguay was forcing Argentina out wide, forcing them to try to beat them through crosses.Argentina finally burned Uruguay out wide when a fantastic buildup sent Pablo Zabaleta down the right wing and his cross found Aguero, who sent a powerful header into the back of the net in the 56th minute. It was after the play that there was cause for concern, as Aguero seemed to have been clutching his shoulder after his goal celebration and momentarily left the pitch.Uruguay was unable to get things going offensively, lacking speed and cohesion against a well-organized Argentinian side. Emotions were running high as a historic rivalry was heating up in Chile.Sergio Romero almost gifted the Uruguayans with the tying goal in the 75th minute when a shot from Maxi Pereira was parried right into the path of Diego Rolan, who launched the chance over a wide-open net. After a Messi shot was hit straight at Fernando Muslera, Alvaro Gonzalez's 25-yard effort was just inches away from Romero's goal.Messi was at it again in the 83rd minute, sending a low strike that seemed destined for the corner of the goal, but Muslera provided a brilliant save.It was Uruguay's turn to be denied, as Rolan headed a corner down toward goal, but it was cleared in the six-yard box in the 88th minute.Romero played hero in the 90th minute when Maxi Pereira picked out Abel Hernandez at the top of the area. Firing a screamer, Romero made a spectacular diving effort to parry the shot away asGoal's Ben Hayward watched Argentina hold on.Argentina moves into a tie with Paraguay at the top of Group B with four points. Argentina will play Jamaica next.
