Published by Tribune on Wed, 15 Feb 2012

CRISIS is looming in Orhuwhorun town in Udu Local Government Area, Delta State, over the killing of a young man by a member of the vigilance group for allegedly stealing a GSM handset. The murder of the young man identified as Obakpororo Kaki, had led to the burning of the family house of the member of the vigilance group. The angry mob also destroyed a Honda Accord car belonging to the president-general of the community.Members of a secret cult who were alleged to have carried out the destruction in a reprisal attack, also went to the community leader's office where documents, 198 bags of cement and four motorcycles were allegedly destroyed.According to a reliable source, trouble started when the late Kaki was allegedly accused of stealing a GSM handset from a resident of the Orhuwhorun community. The source said the owner of the handset reported the matter to members of the community vigilance group who immediately swung into action and apprehended the suspect. The source said the suspect died while he was still with vigilance members. As of the time of filing this report, men of the Military Joint Task Force, JTF have been deployed in the community, working with the police in Ovwian/Aladja to put the situation under control. When contacted, the police spokesman, Mr Charles Muka, said he was yet to be briefed.
