Cheat in exams and be fired, Army tells officers

Published by Guardian on Wed, 15 Feb 2012

THE Nigerian Army has warned to officers participating in the on-going 2012 Lieutenant to Captain rank practical promotion examination not to engage in any form of sharp practices during the exercise.President of the Examination Panel and the Commanding Officer of Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), Minna, Niger State, Maj.-Gen. Joseph Okunbor, said officers caught in such unprofessional conduct would face military court.'Any candidate caught indulging in any form of examination malpractice will be disqualified on the spot and would be returned to his unit and charged. You must avoid acts capable of tarnishing your image or terminating your career in the Army during this examination', he said.Addressing the 276 eligible Lieutenants at the venue of the event in Ota, Ogun State, Okunbor said the performance of the candidates in the examination would determine their progress in the Army. He, therefore, urged them to face the examination with all the seriousness it deserves. He said the examination, which is conducted once in a year, is aimed at producing officers who would proceed to the next rank, test their 'ability, competence, composure under stress and in very difficult situations' so that the Army can produce officers that would be battle-ready at all times.Acknowledging that the exercise is rigorous, he advised officers to put in their best to pass in their first attempt because after three attempts, any officer who fails, would have his military career terminated. He told journalists: 'If they fail in the third attempt, that would be the end of their career. They have to go and seek for alternative vocation elsewhere.'The objective of the examination, according to Okunbor, is to improve their knowledge of the military profession; stimulate the spirit of healthy competition among the candidates; and test their ability to administer human resources at the formation level.Subjects the officers would undergo include tactics, map reading, radio communication, skill at arms, driving and maintenance and administration in the field. He reiterated that candidates must obtain 50 per cent in each subject and 60 per cent overall aggregate to pass the examination according to the approved Nigerian Army policy. He explained that any candidate who scores 70 per cent overall and 49 per cent in any subject automatically fails the examination.
