Equatorial Guinea cage Super Falcons in Abuja

Published by Daily Trust on Sun, 19 Jul 2015

The National Women football team of Equatorial Guinea on Saturday recorded a shocking 1-1 draw against their Nigerian opponents, Super Falcons in the first leg of their Olympic qualifier played in the Abuja National stadium. The Super Falcons started well, mounting continuous pressure on their visitor.Their efforts later paid off in the 25th minute when Halimat's solo effort earned the hosts a 1-0 lead. However, the Super Falcons slowed down their pace in the second half and the visitors punished them for their lack of concentration.Equitorial Guinea took advantage of a defensive error by the home side to level proceedings in the 62nd minute. All efforts by the coach Christopher Danjuma-led side to get a winning goal proved abortive as the visiting side dig deed to keep the Nigerians at bay. After the match, Coach Danjuma apologised for his team's poor performance and assured that needed corrections would be effected ahead of the second leg in Malabo. He added 'I think before we get to second leg whatever challenges we have faced especially emotionally will be dealt with. It is not a hidden fact that one of our members passed on.'But that is not an excuse enough. We will beef up the team in the return leg. CAF didn't help matters. Personally we believe that if Equatorial Guinea will pick a point here, nothing stops us from getting an outright win in their home ground."
