British Open Leaderboard 2015: Sunday Score Updates and Tournament Predictions

Published by Bleacher Report on Sun, 19 Jul 2015

Major tournament Sunday will be without its usual flavor of intense pressure and climactic drama, as the British Open champion wont be crowned until Monday this year.St Andrews took a battering from the unforgiving Scottish elements on Saturday, forcing the R&A to postpone the final round of the tournament. Players just about managed to polish off their second rounds on Saturday evening, with 61 keeping their dreams of Claret Jug glory alive by making the cut.American and major-tournament nearly man Dustin Johnson holds the halfway lead at 10 under par after a second-round 69, while Englishman Danny Willett is one shot back.Johnson was one of those who finished his round late on Saturday, playing his final four holes in one under par to leapfrog Willett at the top of the tree. However, the 31-year-old will be very much looking over his shoulder for the duration of Sundays round, as theres a talented pack looking to chase him down.Heres a look at the Open Championship leaderboard after Round 2:All to Play For at the Home of GolfWhile Johnson and Willett may be sitting pretty at the top of the leaderboard after two very good days work, Opens of the past have taught us that anything can happen on moving day and beyondjust ask Adam Scott. The Australian held a four-shot lead going into the final round of the 2012 Open, but he fluffed his lines to finish behind eventual champion Ernie Els at Lytham.Scott is looking to go one better this time around, though, and he laid the perfect platform for success with a stunning second round of 67.The 2013 Masters champion chalked up five birdies without a blemish on Friday to jump up the leaderboard into a tie for fourth, and hes looking to make up for past agony over the course of the next two roundsas he told BBC Sport:I definitely let that one slip [at Lytham] and I've had a couple of good looks since then. You know what' I think I'm playing with a bit of a chip on my shoulder. When Scott starts firing, he can prove incredibly dangerous, but hes not the only one with credentials to surge and get amongst the action at St Andrews.Countryman Jason Day also sits on seven under with proven ability in majors, while 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen has previous experience on the Old Course, to say the least. But all eyes will be on double major champion Jordan Spieth as we move into the third round, who is currently five shots back of Johnson on five under par.Spieth was more or less the front-runner from the outset for his US Open and Masters titles, so hell need to show a new level of grit and determination this time around. However, he undoubtedly has the ability to do so. Former footballer Matt Le Tissier is one of the youngsters many admirers:A Spieth charge is inevitable. Although he hasnt had it all his way this week so farthe frustrating, wind-swept delay didnt helphes showed glimpses of genius.Justin Rose is also tied for 14th on five under, as well as Sergio Garcia, who birdied the final two holes of Round 2 on Saturday night to move into contentionas The Open revealed:The Spaniard has come second twice at the Open, but his game looks in good shape to go one better this year. Hes feeling good about his chances, too, as he told BBC Sport that hes looking forward to the challenge:It's going to be a long two days. We don't know about the weather but I'm excited and will try to do my best. The weather will, of course, dictate the ease of the Old Course, yet the wind should be a lot calmer for Sundays playper BBC Weather. That much will leave the course there for the takingits just up to someone to seize the chance.Johnson looks in imperious form chasing his maiden major title, but a round in the low 60s is more than a possibility for any man still in the field. That could well be any one of Scott, Spieth, Rose or Garcia, as the penultimate major of the years drama turns up a notch.
