Ogba residents seek Fashola's intervention on flood control

Published by Tribune on Mon, 05 Mar 2012

Residents of Ogba in Ikeja area of Lagos have called on the state government to act fast to fix the collapsed drainages in the area to de-flood the area.Community News learnt from traders in Odo-Eran axis of Ogba that the area had experienced terrible flooding last year, hence the decision of the people to cry to the state governor, Babatunde Fashola, to fix the canal and other water channels in the area before the coming of the rains. Some of the residents said that Lagos State Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA) has awarded contracts for the fixing of the drainages and water channels to contractors. It was also learnt that the contractors have been mobilized by LAMATA.However, some residents who spoke to Community News on condition of anonymity, expressed fears that the government must be very hard on the contractor if they wanted to achieve results.'We equally heard the news that the state government, through LAMATA, had awarded the contact for the clearing of water channels to contractors but up till now, we have not seen anybody working on the damaged drainages, hence our fears.'Apart from the collapsed drainages, Community News learnt that another problem confronting residents of Ogba is poor nature of road network.'Our roads have all gone bad. Motorists spend hours trying to maneuvre their way through pothole ridden roads.'We are calling on the state government to do something fast about our plight now that rain is yet to come. Not much could be done during rainy season, hence our cry to the government'.Community News gathered from workers in the Department of Public Works that they were always in the area to fix the roads, but some of the residents lamented that the roads required total overhauling, not patching.
