Ikorodu residents excited over rehabilitation of Awolowo Road

Published by Tribune on Tue, 13 Mar 2012

Residents of Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos were elated on Wednesday when the state government promised to commission the 2.1 kilometres- Obafemi Awolowo Road before December. The residents who gathered in groups during the inspection tour of the various projects in the area by the state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Femi Hamzat told Community News that the rehabilitation of the road was long overdue. It was gathered that successive governments had neglected the road for several years, but respite came for the residents when the administration of Mr. Babatunde Fashola came on board and awarded the contract for rehabilitation. One of the residents, Mr. Bode Aina stated that the road if delivered as promised by the government would solve the perennial traffic on Lagos/ Ikorodu Expressway.Commenting, Dr Hamzat said that the road project was awarded in 2010 and that it would be completed in the next nine months. He noted that the scope of work had reached 35 per cent while more work would continue to ensure that the deadline for the completion is met.According to him, the government had paid 75 per cent of the fund for the rehabilitation, adding that the contractors had already demolished the existing inadequate drainage and culverts and had provided new ones.He explained that the rehabilitation of Awolowo Road would enhance economic growth, improve traffic within Ikorodu environs through Itamaga to Ijede and Itoikin Road.Other roads due for completion in Ikorodu, Hamzat stated included Ibeshe and Alhaja Borokini/Ola Saheed Street to open the area for social and economic opportunities.Ibeshe Road, the commissioner stated is one of the major roads in Ikorodu with 7,000 metres long and an average width of 15 metres.'This road is the only access to Oshorun and Ibeshe Village where institutions such as Voice of Nigeria (VOA), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Nichemtex, Kith and Kin Educational Schools and the Lagos State Millennium Housing Scheme are also located,' he said. The level of work done on this road, according to the commissioner is 51 per cent and it is also due for inauguration before October this year. For the Alhaja Borokini/Ola Saheed Street, the road would serve the newly established Poverty Alleviation Institute and would also serve as a link from Irewunmi Street, Mabadeje Street to Igbogbo.
