Oghenerobo wins third editionTHE dream of motorbike race becoming an international sport was boosted last weekend as the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, pledged to construct a four-kilometer asphalt track for the game in January 2013.The governor made the pledge during the launching of the racing sport, which took place at Evbobanosa Village, near Benin City, last weekend. Oshiomhole said the dream of the people who brought the sport to Edo State would not be allowed to die, stating: 'I promise you that by January next year, the asphalt track for this game will be constructed.'In the race tagged 'Easter Day Race' by the organiser, Motocross Naija, the 12 riders had a fun filled day accelerating and meandering round the circuit track with some professional precision ostensibly to have a fair share of the total prize tag of N450,000.00.At the end of the 10-lap race, which lasted about 20 minutes, Harrison Oghenerobo rallied a time of 16:49:22 seconds to grab the first prize of N200,000.00. The champion of the first edition was closely followed by Omoruyi Onyeka, who raced 16:45:23 to win a cash prize of N150, 000.00, while the third position was won by Saturday Osayande, who raced 16:49:34 seconds to pick N100, 000.00.The first eight riders from the fourth position were also not left out of the largesse as they picked a consolation prize of N10, 000.00 each. Interestingly, the Edo State governor announced a N50,000.00 cash gift for the ridders as a way of boosting their morale.Speaking at the end of the event, President of Motocross Naija, Oduagbon Okao, commended the governor for his love for sports development in the state.Other dignitaries present at the occasion included the Enogie of Evbobanosa community, His Royal Highness, Prof. Akenzuwa, the Esogban of Benin Kingdom, David Edebiri, and some council officials from Orhiomwon Local Council Area, among other traditional rulers.
