N/East speakers meet on security

IN view of the security challenges Nigeria is battling with, especially in the North-East geopolitical zone of the country, the speakers of the six state houses of assembly in the zone recently held a meeting to address the security and other socio-economic problem facing the zone.Revealing this to journalists in Bauchi, on Thursday, the speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Honourable Yahaya Mohammed Miya, said the speakers resolved to legislate laws aimed at improving the standard of living of the people of the zone and general development of the zone in particular and the country in general.'We, the speakers of the six states of the North-East zone, recently met and we are making effort to make good laws that will improve the security and the standard of living of the people in the zone. 'We are doing this in order to bring development to the North-East zone in particular and Nigeria at large,' Miya stated.The Bauchi speaker attributed the problem of insecurity in the zone to the high level of poverty and unemployment among the people, despite the abundant natural resources the zone was endowed with.He informed that as part of efforts aimed at checking insecurity in the zone, the Bauchi and Jigawa states houses of assembly were collaborating in the area of legislation, to address the problems of almajiri in the two states.Meanwhile, all standing committees in the Bauchi assembly had been dissolved, The speaker, Honour-able Miya, disclosed this, adding that the dissolution was to enable the assembly to perform its legislative functions effectively.
