Lagos govt issues query to striking doctors 'Begins recruitment of new doctors

Published by Tribune on Wed, 18 Apr 2012

FOLLOWING a three-day warning strike embarked upon by doctors in Lagos State public hospitals last week, the government has issued queries to all doctors who participated in the action, as it placed advertisement in the national dailies to engage new ones. The chairman, Medical Guild, Dr Olumuyiwa Odusote, told the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday that the government had actually served the doctors queries, to explain the rationale behind their industrial action.According to him, the government wanted to know the rationale behind the three-day warning strike by the doctors, who had demanded for proper implementation of a downward review of excessive taxation and the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale Structure (CONMESS).However, Odusote said none of the doctor would answer the query, adding that the Medical Guild would do so on their behalf. In the advertorial signed by the Lagos State Health Service Commission and the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), the government wanted to engage the service of medical officers and consultants/specialists.In a swift reaction, Odutsote said it was good that government recruited new doctors to reduce the burden on them, adding that if it was on the basis of trying to sack the doctors, it would not work.According to him, during the last strike, the government recruited new doctors to break their rank and files, but the new doctors ended up joining the strike. Also in a circular signed by the Lagos State Head of Service, Prince Adesegun Ogunlewe, the government said it would invoke Section 43 (1) of the Trade Disputes Acts to ensure that the doctors did not receive any salary through the period of the strike.
