Gunmen kill man, abduct 2 grandchildren in Maiduguri

Published by Tribune on Fri, 27 Apr 2012

A retired civil servant, MallamShettima Chibok, was shot dead at his residence at Bullumkuttu Tsallake area of Maidu-guri, the Borno State capital, by unknown gunmen on Wednesday.Nigerian Tribune also learnt that the gunmen also abducted two of his grandchildren aged between seven and 10 years.Residents of the area told the Nigerian Tribune that several threat letters were sent to the deceased, warning him to leave the area since last year, after he had escaped an attack where 5 persons were killed.Another resident, however, told the Nigerian Tribune that the abducted children were neither his biological children nor his grandchildren, but were children of a woman he married sometime ago.According to the residents, they believed that Mallam Chibok was killed for allegedly taking the stepchildren to church.'The woman he married was a Muslim and she came along with those children that were abducted. I think the killing may be as a result of the deceased taking the stepchildren who are from Muslim background to church,' a resident said.Confirming the incident, spokesman of the Joint Task Force on Operation Restore Order in Borno, Lieutenant-Colonel Shamsu Musa, said the assailants were led to the house by an informant, adding that JTF had arrested the informant and recovered the tricycle used by the gunmen.
