BPE probe: Presidency set to implement recommendations

THE presidency appears set to take action on the recommendations of the Senate over the probe of the activities of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), sources said on Sunday.The Senate had, in February, passed 42 recommendations submitted by the Senator Ahmed Lawan-led committee, which probed activities of the BPE and its privatisation of major national assets.One of the recommendations was the removal of the Director -General of the BPE, which was passed by the Senate. The Senate also approved the recommendation approving the cancelation of a number of privatised assets.There were indications that the government might have jettisoned the report, following its inaction in the past months, but sources said the president personally called for the report last week.A source said when the president asked for the report, no one could lay hands on it in the Presidential Villa, prompting the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, to write the committee demanding for a fresh copy.'I can confirm to you that the new copy has reached the president's table now and the government is set to do something,' the source said.It was, however, gathered that the presidency would follow the due process in implementing any report from the National Assembly.
