Apapa Chairman's Cup kicks of tomorrow

THE stage is now set for the Apapa Local Council Chairman's football tourney slated to commence tomorrow in Lagos.The grassroots competition is the second edition and has 48 clubs ready to jostle for honours and the N500,000 prize up for grabs. According to the sponsor and chairman of the council, Ayodeji Joseph, the cash will be evenly distributed among the three best teams.The winner will receive N250,000, the second and third will take home N150,000 and N100,000 respectively. In addition, Joseph revealed, there would be prizes for the most valuable player, best goalkeeper and the fair play team.He said: 'The draws for 48 teams that registered for the championship were held in the presence of the council executives, players and coaches.'Four venues are billed for use at the championship - the main bowl of the National Stadium, Surulere, Navy playing ground, Ajegunle, NIP main bowl and Legacy astro turf pitch of the National Stadium Surulere.'We are poised to unearth the potentials of our youth and we believe we can get the likes of (Austin) Okocha from them. Come June the council football team will be travelling to the United Kingdom for trials and when they return they will be getting prepared for the Lagos/MTN Street Soccer because we are set to retain the trophy.
