Aboru youths protest use of community playground for parties

Published by Tribune on Thu, 31 May 2012

Residents of the Aboru community, in Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area, especially the youths in the area, have condemned the incessant use of the two playing fields located on the two ends of the pipeline area in the community for parties, adding that the acts were gradually defeating the purpose for which the fields were constructed.Expressing their anger with Community News recently, the residents, especially youths, who make use of the playing fields for their football practices and matches, argued that some people in the area had now made it a habit of using the football fields at any time of the day for social activities, thereby disrupting sporting activities in the community.'You know these two fields are very important to us. We do our sporting activities there, and even sometimes we invite other football clubs outside the community for matches here. But unfortunately, we now find it difficult using the fields for this purpose,' lamented Abiodun, a resident and one of those that use the fields. He added that the football pitches are always left in pitiable conditions after the events, thereby exposing those that might want to use them to danger.'They would not even bother to take care of the fields after the events. They leave bones, pure water satchets and even broken bottles, all remnants of the parties, on the fields, for us to pack,' he added. Another resident, Dipo, whose residence is situated almost opposite that of the Egberongbe playing pitch, accused those that sell lands (the Omo oniles) in the area of commercialising the recreation centres for their selfish interests.'They are the people that collect money from these celebrants without thinking of the consequences or the adverse effects their action may have on the community. Until they are made to realise that the fields belong to the community and that the whole community should have an idea of who uses the field and when, their activities would continue to be inimical to the growth of sports in the area,' he argued.Dipo argued that the fields had served as avenues for the teeming youths to vent their energies and develop their sporting skills, adding that 'denying them of such facilities can portend danger to the community.
