Yobe revokes N2.5b Nguru-Machina road contract

WORRIED by the continued delay in delivering its project, the Yobe State Government has revoked contract for the construction of 60-kilometre Nguru-Machina road project, which was awarded during Sen. Bukar Abba Ibrahim administration.The Governor Ibrahim Gaidam announced the revocations of the contract at the weekend, while visiting the project site as part of his tour of ongoing and completed road projects across the state.Gaidam however, expressed disappointments that despite huge resourcesexpended on the road project; the level of work attained so far has been below expectation.He said the road was initially awarded at the cost of N2.2 billion by the previous administration to F.K Construction Limited; but in 2007 when the current administration first came to power, the contract was reviewed upwards to N2.5 billion.'Despite the review and our determination to ensure completion, the contractor continues to be slow and even inactive. More so, the quality of work leaves much to be desired,' he said.The Governor directed the State Ministry of Works to set a committee that will open up discussion with the contractor, with a view to getting him pay back the balance of money paid by the government but for which no work was executed.The Governor expressed the commitment of his administration's to the road sector, saying the focus on opening up the State through various road projects is making movements easier and facilitate economic and social activities. Earlier, the Works Commissioner, Lawan Shettima Ali had told the Governor that the contractor had refused to return to site after all entreaties.Ali said that over 40 kilometres of township roadshave been completed and handed over to his ministry in Potiskum, Gashu'a and Nguru towns.
